5 real-life tips from women working in tech

OLD BRIDGE – Jennifer Scandariato walked confidently into an office a decade ago to interview for a technology position at a company in Florida, when she was asked if she was there for the receptionist’s job.

Consider that lesson No. 1. She would need to break down stereotypes quickly. She would need to be engaged. She would need to ask questions. She would need to show she belonged.

“When you start opening up and having a dialogue with people, they understand, wow, there’s a lot of substance there,” said Scandariato, now director of test engineering at iCIMS, a technology company.

Scandariato joined a panel at iCIMS on Tuesday night to talk to about 60 people about obstacles women face in the male-dominated technology industry. They talked about overcoming subtle – and not-so-subtle – biases; asking for pay raises; balancing family life; and the need on occasion to remind themselves that they deserved to be there.
