The Canadians came to the New Jersey Technology Council (NJTC) to ask N.J. developers to work on apps for their Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM) BlackBerry products including the BlackBerry Playbook. Specifically, two RIM spokeswomen, Lindsy Henderson and Arlene Setacci, from Waterloo, Ontario presented the ins and outs of the RIM platform for N.J. developers at the Madison, N.J. campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The NJTC Mobile Application Forum event was billed as fostering application development and partnership between Canadian and N.J. companies. Panel discussions on applications trends and free versus paid apps provided an opportunity for companies from the N.J. area and Canada to provide their opinions on where the industry is going.

Previously, NJTC had solicited companies to compete for mobile app awards in various categories. The winners were announced at the meeting. The Judges Award was given to ZSL, Inc., Edison NJ, for its Mobile Wound Care solution, an app that replaces the manual process of taking measurements of wounds and lesions and updating patient records. NJTC also recognized the company’s SmartPrise BI Mobile app, which brings enterprise business analytics to a mobile environment. The products were developed by the company’s R&D; division, called IDEA lab, also in Edison, NJ.

Other N.J. companies honored:

  • For content, Berkeley Varitronics Systems, Metuchen, N.J., a private firm with 32 employees, for its WatchHound cell phone monitoring app aimed at unauthorized use of cell phones in prisons, companies, and other restricted environments.
  • For M Health, MTBC, of Somerset, N.J., won for its iRX, an Apple approved mobile e-prescribing application for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
  • For Smart City Applications, PoliceSoftware.com,LLC,  Manalapan, N.J., for taking its applications for police into the squad car.
