Morrison Technologies Brings Tech Entrepreneurship to Bayonne
Morrison Technologies (MT), which has been busy renovating its new offices in Bayonne, will hold its grand opening there on February 7, and the public is invited.
It is worth noting that MT is where Anna Lukasiak, New Jersey tech activist and the founder and former captain of the Code for America brigade in Jersey City, now hangs her hat. She is MT’s director of business development.
Besides offering professional services including network and system administration, cyber security solutions and support, software development and project management, the company plans to hold entrepreneurship events. It will also offer coworking.
In 2019, MT will become a home for 1 Million Cups, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation program designed to educate, engage and inspire entrepreneurs around the country; and it hopes to host a Startup Weekend, Lukasiak told NJTechWeekly.com.
The small firm was founded in 2003 in Charleston, South Carolina, as an IT services company by Alexander Morrison. In 2015, the company opened its second office in Cali, Colombia, to provide technology solutions such as internet access, security cameras and an online presence to local small businesses.
In Colombia, the company trained students to become administrators and operation managers. It organized meetups that ranged from teaching technical skills to implementing community open-data projects.
In 2016, MT focused on New Jersey, hosting the Summer Technology and Entrepreneurship Program (STEP), which introduced high school students to technology and entrepreneurship through hands-on instruction. STEP introduced students to current technology concepts and trends, including machine learning and data science. At the end of the program, students pitched their business ideas and presented their projects.
STEP was rolled out in Jersey City and Newark in July and August of 2017, and was covered by NJTechWeekly.com here. That same year, Morrison Technologies Community Services (MTCS), a nonprofit arm of the company, was created to help expand the program beyond Hudson County.
In June 2018, MT moved its headquarters to Bayonne. It’s now a five-person company operating in Bayonne, Charleston, and Cali. The company outsources work to freelancers, hiring many on an as-needed basis. It has also begun taking on interns at the new Bayonne offices to help them gain hands-on experience working for a small business.
MT is a minority- and veteran-owned organization that primarily employs women. The core team ‒ Alexander Morrison, Damaris Lopez, and Anna Lukasiak ‒ were beneficiaries of educational programs offered to underrepresented communities in the 1990s.
