Attention New Jersey Startups: Now Is Your Chance To Get Serious Money, Connections And Mentorship Through TechUnited:N.J.’s BetterX Challenges. Deadlines Approach
A total of $100,000 in startup prizes will be awarded at the 2022 Propelify Innovation Festival which will take place on October 6 on the Hoboken waterfront.
The awards are part of TechUnited:NJ’s BetterX challenges, a program implemented by the organization three years ago. The program now has grown to engage climate tech startups, startups interested in Main Street small business development that will be able to use Newark as a sandbox, and health tech startups.
Deadlines for applications are coming up shortly! This year NJTechWeekly.com would love to see some winners from the New Jersey tech community! Here are the descriptions of the challenges.
$50K BetterPlanet Challenge, powered by PSEG
Promoting ClimateTech adoption for New Jersey. Startups working on innovative solutions that provide an inventive approach to decarbonization or alternatives to fossil fuels are encouraged to apply.
- Solutions can include software, hardware, or a combination of the two.
- Solutions can be implemented affordably.
- Solutions can be implemented in an equitable manner.
- Startup has raised less than $1M to date, or has generated less than $2M in revenue to date.
- Startup is based in the U.S.
Preference is given to:
- Companies based in New Jersey
- Solutions that will create new jobs in New Jersey.
- Solutions that make the most impact for all.

$25K BetterConnected: Newark Challenge, powered by Audible
Promoting the modernization and growth of main street businesses, propelled by technology and innovation. Startups working on innovative solutions that Main Street retailers and small businesses can implement are invited to apply.
The applicant companies must address the following challenge statement. For Newark retailers and small businesses, how might technology:
- Increase retail traffic and customer lifetime value
- Provide main street businesses with digital access
- Democratize access to capital and financial equity
The criteria for the BetterConnected: Newark Challenge:
- The solution must be thoughtful about its impact specifically on minority business owners
- Equitable adoption or implementation of the solution is possible from inception
- Implementation of the solution in Newark provides an opportunity for workforce development or training
- Solutions can include software, hardware, or a combination of the two
- The company has fundraised or generated revenue of $1M or less
- The company is based in the U.S.
- Preference is given to:
- Applicants willing to relocate or expand to, or are already operating out of, a Newark office or headquarters
- Companies based in New Jersey
- Solutions that will create new jobs in New Jersey

Calling all startups working to improve the “modern patient experience” with a solution that provides an innovative approach to patient intake and scheduling, medical records and patient education, hospital/healthcare system patient-facing processes, or triage and post-procedure care.
Criteria:
- Equitable adoption or implementation of the solution is possible from inception
- Implementation of the solution in healthcare settings provides an opportunity for workforce development or training
- Solutions can include software, hardware, or a combination of the two.
- The company is generating $2M or less, annually.
- The company is based in the U.S.
- Preference is given to:
- Companies based in New Jersey
- Solutions that will create new jobs in New Jersey
